It can be hard to find the joy in the minutiae of ISO—pages upon pages of acronyms, meeting notes, nuts-and-bolts bureaucracy about actual nuts and bolts. But without it, and the standardization it provides, the world would be a significantly more chaotic place. Understanding how the organization came to be requires a journey back through the history of modern standardization, a peek at some of the stranger—and most instrumental—standards, and a look at its political philosophy, one that stands in stark contrast to how most internationally significant decisions are made elsewhere in the world.

Fasteners are the hardware components which are used to mechanically join two or more objects together. In the same context, aerospace fasteners are special grade hardware devices, used to connect parts of aircraft during original equipment manufacturing and aftermarket servicing. Aerospace fasteners are broadly used in commercial aircraft, military aircraft, ballistic missiles, rockets and satellites. Aerospace fasteners are made under strict regulations and standards so as to withstand high fatigue loading and drastic temperature changes. Manufacturers are focused to introduce aerospace fasteners with light weight and high strength metallurgical structure in order to provide increased life and reliability rate along with enhanced fuel efficiency of the aircraft.

These were the four most commonly cited grievances of having the government as a client. This begs the question that if working with the government is such a thankless endeavour, then why not limit agency business to the private sector? The response was refreshingly honest and unanimous, and best summed up by Sohail Kisat, Group Chairman, MCOM: “Government is the only client that allows the agency to retain a 15% commission on media placement and that is where the real money is. In the private sector, the margins are as low as two to three percent, which is why we see agencies pitching for the so-called ‘dreadful government campaigns.”’

Applying that standard, the court held that the plaintiff’s claims were not conflict preempted because there was no evidence in the record showing that the FAA would not have approved a change to the carburetor’s screws or attachment system. The court noted that Lycoming had previously made changes to the type certificate for this engine, “which the FAA approved in short order.” The court also found that the FAA would likely have approved the plaintiff’s proposed change to the carburetor because Lycoming was previously granted permission by the FAA to remove the requirement that safety wire be used to connect the float bowl and throttle body of the carburetor – the precise alternative design that the plaintiff proposed. In further support of its finding that the FAA likely would have approved the change, the court cited multiple letters sent to Lycoming from the FAA documenting the ongoing issue with leakage between the two parts of the carburetor due to loose screws, the Lycoming service bulletin, which acknowledged the issue with leakage, and letters from Precision Airmotive, LLC detailing the ongoing issues with the screws and recommending that Lycoming evaluate whether a new attachment system should be designed.

According to Scott, adhesives are a “one size fits all” solution, offering a single method of assembling multiple components and substrates without using fasteners or molded clips. “A single adhesive can be used for a very broad range of applications, joint configurations and substrates; whereas several types of screws may be required for a single toy and possibly dozens or hundreds for an entire line of toys,” he points out.
