BRC has been selling framing in the United States since the early 1990s. End-users include OEMs, Tier 1s and integrators that serve industries as diverse as medical devices, automotive, aerospace, white goods and consumer electronics.

The real power of 3D printing is in infinite customization of parts. This becomes especially powerful when you combine 3D printing with existing materials. I have been developing a few simple tricks to make generic fasteners and printed connectors a perfect match for aluminum extrusion, via a novel twist or two on top of techniques you may already know.

A common, but too-often ignored problem related to installing thread-forming screws in thermoplastic is plasticization or softening of the material. This is particularly applicable when installing fasteners with systems that run at 1,000 rpm and higher. Plasticization gives the appearance that a torque-controlled system is installing a screw correctly at, say, 20 in-lbs, but a phenomenon called joint relaxation can soon follow. Within a matter of seconds, minutes or hours, it can make initial torque in the joint fall off dramatically; sometimes by up to 50 percent (to 10 in-lbs net, in this example).

The fasteners you choose for your precision engine must be held to the same kind of high tolerances that every other part is held to. The threads must be consistent, and critical areas (like the radius under the bolt heads, and the chamfers in the washers) must be both correct in a dimensional sense and consistent from part to part.
