For exterior wood-to-wood finishes, the MiTek Washer Head fasteners also offer an alternative to lag screws. They are available in lengths from 2-7/8″ to 8″. They feature a large, flat washer head that, after installation, causes less interference than a higher-profile fastener. Also available, MiTek has come up with a yellow zinc-finished washer head fastener.  For multi-ply EWP and wood connections, these fasteners allow for one-sided connections on 2, 3, and 4-ply beams and truss girders. They come available in lengths from 2-7/8″ to 6-3/4″. Both of these options feature a T30 Torx drive.

Magnetic stud finders use powerful rare earth magnets to detect the location of metal screws or nails that hold the drywall panels in place. As you slide this type of stud finder over a wall, it is magnetically attracted to any spot directly above a nail or screw—you will actually feel it pulling in that direction, and you may even see the stud finder stick! (Most magnetic stud finders are lightweight and have magnets powerful enough that they will hold through the drywall.) Magnetic stud finders work to a depth of about ¾-inch, which is sufficient most of the time for finding studs behind standard ½-inch or 5/8-inch drywall. When you locate a nail or screw, you’ve located a stud. Because drywall fasteners are located typically 12 to 16 inches apart, it’s recommended that you move a magnetic stud finder over the wall in a sweeping “S” motion to more quickly detect one.

For M-6/MI-6, use a James screw. I’m told it’s a hell of a screw and it’s certainly the only one that gives that trademark bond, a James Bond.

Our final piece of the knob-pot puzzle happens when you attempt to install a push-on knob on a solid-shaft pot, like putting plastic Strat knobs on a Tele. First, use a Dremel tool or a small round file to bore out the insert of the push-on knob until it fits on the straight shaft. Then get a setscrew designed for dome knobs (they’re sold as spare parts), measure it with your digital caliper or micrometer, choose a drill bit that’s slightly smaller, and carefully drill through one side of the knob. Put the knob on the pot and gently tighten the setscrew against the solid shaft. Done!

Maybe it’s just the fact that I’ve grown up with metric units for everything, but having “sizes” where “size 0” is a non-zero width seems bizarre. Why not just specify the diameter of the driver?
