The first scenario is a hot topic in guitar repair shops worldwide: installing U.S. pots (measured in inches) in a guitar that sports metric electronics. For example, Epiphone guitars have a very good build quality, but they often suffer from poor electronics, so replacing the stock metric pots with high-quality U.S. CTS pots will be a real upgrade. The problem is the holes in the guitar are too small and the U.S. pots will not fit. The solution is to enlarge the holes from 8 mm to 9.5 mm (3/8"). This sounds easy, but it isn’t!

• Some power tool manufacturers have improved on the standard drill by manufacturing designated power screwdrivers, or screw-insertion tools geared to specific applications. Drywall screw guns, for example, are used only for hanging drywall, while subflooring screw guns work specifically with collated screw coils.

I recommend screws for all types of drywall installation. The better homebuilders are insisting that installers screw their drywall to prevent callbacks by nail-pop annoyed customers. Drywall screws have gained that mythological status enjoyed by only a few products such as construction adhesive, WD-40 and duct-tape and no repair inventory is complete without them.

Always start with the most gentle means of “persuasion” first to avoid damaging or breaking off the screw heads. If the gentle methods don’t work, then move on to the more heavy-duty methods (#2 and #3) to remove the rusted screws.

Some of the well-established magazines also had an impact on social issues.
