As soon as the nut thread has formed completely, the fastener is drawn in until the head contacts the top sheet. At that point, the fastener is tightened like a conventional screw.

• Ratcheting screwdrivers save time and reduce the need to lift and reposition the screwdriver tip after every turn. An internal ball-bearing mechanism allows the user to make multiple turns of the screw through an easy back-and-forth wrist action. The ratcheting action can be changed from one direction to the other by switching a button on the screwdriver, so that a DIYer can both insert screws (clockwise motion) and remove screws (counter-clockwise motion).

A common, but too-often ignored problem related to installing thread-forming screws in thermoplastic is plasticization or softening of the material. This is particularly applicable when installing fasteners with systems that run at 1,000 rpm and higher. Plasticization gives the appearance that a torque-controlled system is installing a screw correctly at, say, 20 in-lbs, but a phenomenon called joint relaxation can soon follow. Within a matter of seconds, minutes or hours, it can make initial torque in the joint fall off dramatically; sometimes by up to 50 percent (to 10 in-lbs net, in this example).

The expanded TCB line incorporates a cartridge design for easy diameter adjustments. It can be adjusted by placing multiple-sized shims between the tool body and cartridge, enabling a single tool body to machine various diameters. Fine diameter adjustments in increments of 0.100mm (0.004") are also possible with thinner shims sold separately.
