“Single-start means that there is only one “ridge” wrapped around the cylinder of the screw’s body. Another way to express this is that lead and pitch are parametrically related, and the parameter that relates them, the number of starts, very often has a value of 1, in which case their relationship becomes equality. In general, lead is equal to pitch times the number of starts.”

Another advantage of friction-drilling screws is their higher drive-to-strip ratio compared with thread-cutting screws, especially with thinner sheet metal. “With thin sheet metal, especially steel, it’s common to strip out self-drilling screws,” Baeumler points out. “The difference in torque between driving a screw and stripping it is extremely small. Friction-drilling screws form out the material, so there’s more material for the screw to engage, and the torque window is a lot bigger.”

I use Autodesk Fusion 360 to insert these reference models from the included catalog of parts, then position and use them as cutting tools. I just designed and printed a fan shroud which included perhaps 22 bolts and is pretty impressive.

A common, but too-often ignored problem related to installing thread-forming screws in thermoplastic is plasticization or softening of the material. This is particularly applicable when installing fasteners with systems that run at 1,000 rpm and higher. Plasticization gives the appearance that a torque-controlled system is installing a screw correctly at, say, 20 in-lbs, but a phenomenon called joint relaxation can soon follow. Within a matter of seconds, minutes or hours, it can make initial torque in the joint fall off dramatically; sometimes by up to 50 percent (to 10 in-lbs net, in this example).

One example is the Mag-Form screw from Acument Global Technologies Inc. It has a pentagonal shank profile, widely spaced threads, and a broad, 105-degree flank angle. When driven into magnesium, a compressive action forms strong threads with minimal debris generation. The large flank angle allows the fastener to be inserted and removed multiple times without damaging the threads.

This was the winter of 1992. It was a time when there were hardly a handful of newspapers, magazines and even fewer radio and TV channels. For us younger lot, who were just beginning to understand that an imagination is where smart businesses mint their profits, our burgeoning ad industry seemed to be myopically orchestrated around the priorities of newspaper barons and the agency moguls they did business with. Awards were based on billings, not thinking.
