Mihm: Many factors played a role in frustrating the adoption of the metric system in the United States. But much of the opposition from the 1870s onward came from the manufacturers of high-end machine tools. They had based their entire system—which encompassed everything from lathe machines to devices for cutting screw threads—on the inch. Retooling, they argued, was prohibitively expensive. They successfully blocked the adoption of the metric system in Congress on a number of occasions in the late 19th and 20th century.

Relying on the reasoning from Wyeth, the Third Circuit held that Lycoming was more akin to the brand name drug manufacturer, rather than the generic manufacturer, because Lycoming, as the type certificate holder, was in a position to make changes to the type certificate for the engine albeit only with FAA prior approval. Although the court recognized that the FAA process was different from that of a brand name pharmaceutical manufacturer seeking to change its design or warning, it nonetheless held that “[a]lthough the FAA does not explicitly have a [changes being effected (“CBE”)]-type process that allows the certificate holder to make a change before obtaining approval, the FAA allows the certificate holder to request permission to make a minor or major change.”[3]

You can customize a guitar by replacing its stock knobs with new ones, but, again, this can be perplexing. One problem occurs when you try to install knobs designed for solid-shaft pots onto a split-shaft pot. Let’s say you want to put Telecaster-style dome knobs on a Stratocaster, but you want to keep the Strat’s stock split-shaft pots. Typically knobs for solid-shaft pots use a setscrew to fasten them to the shaft. If you put this type of knob on split-shaft pots and tighten the screw improperly, you can break one or both halves of the shaft (Photo 1).

Though, you can break them down into three categories. One is the category of fastener that’s designed to transmit as much torque as the user wants without destroying itself. The second is a fastener that’s meant to flummox the user as much as it possibly can. We know these as security screws, and they are hated. The last category is the rare fastener that’s designed with the actual fastening as a useful secondary consideration. For example, aerospace actually has a Philips-type screw that’s designed to ruin itself if over torqued. I’d also throw thumbscrews in this category. They’re usually awful screws, but you don’t need a tool!

There are three variants: Version I has a flat top with a large operating area for switches, push buttons and touch displays. Version II features a smooth sloping top for desktop applications. Version III also has a sloping top but is recessed to accommodate a membrane keypad or product label.
