A much more isolated, but related, effect can be seen in specialty nuts, such as those used in aerospace. These nuts have a thick flange to minimize dilation, but they have a thin wall above the flange to save weight. This often results in axial compression of the nut body prior to bolt yield.
Believe it or not, I’ve been designing my plastic parts to include the bolt holes/threading for standard bolts. I’ve taken into account the standard shrinkage depending upon the print orientation and have this down to a science now. For example, using an M4 reference model shrinks down nicely in the Z-orientation to an M3. An 8-32 reference model in the Z-orientation corresponds with a 6-32 bolt in real life. X- or Y-oriented bolts at least on my printer render true so there’s no need to adjust for them.
Adhesives are commonly used to assemble toys that don’t require servicing or disassembly, such as dolls and detailing on model trains. “Since most toys are intended to be thrown away if broken and do not require service or maintenance during their life, adhesives are a great fit for toy manufacturing,” claims Scott.
