The most common design challenge on the threaded end of a bolted joint is determining the required thread engagement when using tapped holes. As with nuts, the objective is to ensure that the failure mode in the event of overtightening is by bolt fracture rather than thread strip. This mode is preferable, because it is more obvious (stripped threads don’t generate a loose bolt) and repair is generally less expensive and more dependable.

Another option is the ALtracs Plus thread-forming screw from EJOT. The fastener has a unique thread geometry that provides greater shear area between threads, resulting in higher pull-out and strip-out performance.

For precision threads and low-volume production, cut threads are common. Cut threads are produced in either a lathe or a CNC machine by removing material to form the thread profile, either with a thread cutting tool translated lengthwise against a rotating workpiece, or with a tap (for internal threads) or a die (for external threads).

Next, female threads are created in the extrusion by the thread-forming zone of the fastener. This step is performed at a lower speed—approximately 2,000 rpm.
