One reason threaded fasteners are so widely used is that they can generate a tremendous amount of clamp load in a small area. Clamp load is central because it is the mechanism by which joint components are held together without moving relative to one another—arguably the primary requirement of a structural joint. However, placing a large load on a small area creates a high level of stress, which, in turn, can lead to problems. For example, a ½ – 20 Grade 8 bolt can supply nearly 20,000 pounds of clamp load. A standard hex head bearing on a standard 9/16-inch clearance hole means all that load would act on an area only half the size of a dime. The resulting stress exceeds the yield strength of most materials. An analogy is the effect spike heels can have on wood floors.

Measuring how tight a fastener is literally calculating how much that same fastener is being stretched based on its resistance to turning. It’s a very critical dimension, since having all the fasteners delivering identical pressure and clamping force on a given component (like a cylinder head or connecting rod cap) means the load is equally distributed. Any variance between torque figures means one fastener will be carrying a greater percentage of the load than any other, and this can become hazardous to the component being held (like a cylinder head, which can warp or leak under such conditions) or the fastener itself (like the connecting rod bolt).
WP SHOCK SETTINGSThe KTM shock has a good setting. We spent most of our time dialing in the forks, although sag played a big part in balancing out the bike. We were all over the map, going as low as 115mm and as high as 100mm. Most test riders split the difference at 107mm, although the sweet spot is between 102mm and 108mm, depending on the rider and track. For hardcore racing, we recommend this shock setup for the 2018 KTM 250SX (stock specs arein parentheses):Spring rate: 42 N/mHi-compression: 1-1/4 turns out (2 turns)Lo-compression: 8 clicks out (15 out)Rebound: 14 clicks out (15 out)Race sag: 107mm (110mm)Notes: For riders below 185 pounds, start turning out the low-speed compression to get the rear end to settle.
For young people, there were two trendy ‘hangout spots’. The square profiles feature a T- slot on each side that is 6, 8 or 10 millimeters wide. Smaller profiles feature narrower slots because they support less weight and require smaller connectors. The opposite is true for larger profiles.
Stainless steel is also an iron-based alloy, but it contains at least 10.5-percent chromium. The addition of the chromium alters the surface of the fastener and makes the material corrosion resistant. Naturally, there are many grades of stainless steel, as other ingredients can be added, and the percentage of chromium can be altered. If corrosion resistance or appearance is a concern (like when the fasteners are being used on the outside of the engine, like intake manifold bolts for instance) then stainless steel fasteners are a viable option.
It is ironic that some of Pakistan’s recent advertising work that is archetypical in nature, has been written by Indian writers. There could be deeper cultural reasons for this phenomenon, but we will never have creative excellence without mass cultural insights.
